Robert Jacks (1943-2014) was one of Australia’s most significant and accomplished abstract artists. From his first sell-out solo exhibition at Gallery A in Melbourne in 1966, through to his ongoing exploration of abstraction in painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking, his work has charted a distinctive and influential path through late twentieth and early twenty-first century Australian art. This rare screenprint Yellow Guitar, was commissioned by the Print Council of Australia as a special Presidential Print in 2003.

Ultimately, the remedy for an identity crisis is accepting and loving yourself as who you are. The idealised version of ourselves we imagine and at times long to be reflects an inherent narcissism of impregnable self-infatuation, echoing warnings from the Ovidian myth where the constant longing for this idealised self, hinders self-development.

Alethea Richter Diffusion (State 1) Silkscreen Edition of 30 Image Size: 41.2 cm x 41.2 cm Paper Size: 55cm x 55cm My printed works consider the unstable nature of attention and distraction in the contemporary digital experience. Through the visual language of the geometric pixel grid, colour theory and optical movement are explored on the printed surface. The work Diffusion (State 1) is a twelve layer silkscreen that engages mechanical and hand generated marks to move between multiple states of order and disruption.  The image surface expands and contracts under scrutiny, its colour and form shifting in and out of alignment like lost signals, corrupted images, or incomplete thoughts.

Light Shifting Mokuhanga (baren printed water-based woodblock print) using watercolour, mica, gum arabic Edition size: 30 Image size: 56 x 38 cm Paper size: 56 x 38 cm My art explores belonging and dislocation. In the last two years 'isolation' and 'separation' have joined the key words. The process can result in a very narrative print or follow certain materials that spark an association leading to evocative, abstract pieces. Currently I am exploring 'light' as the subject in my prints, playing with white ink, white paper, hints of colour and mica. The real-life inspiration came from a period of isolation in a sparsely furnished, white painted room, where I spent long hours watching sunlight move along the walls. This raised my interest in pieces that come alive with light, works that shift and change with the position of the viewer and the movement of the light source. This means that any reproduction is unsatisfactory; it can only show a flat view on one aspect of the work. This makes it a very corporeal work, alive in paper, hibernating only in a digital representation.

Untitled (Corner Study) Two colour woodblock Edition size: 30 Image size: 47 x 68 cm Paper size: 56 x 76 cm My print work is a physical and material exploration into thinking...thinking through a evolving print vocabulary. This is pivotal within my practice—I do not go to the print room with the intention of making a reproduction of a prescribed image from a matrix—rather, I go to the print room to begin a series of thoughts based on ‘pieces gathered’. The prints are derived by the process of making, by drawing on available ingredients that contribute to a sequence of what I call ‘printable events’. Within these interactions, one may achieve the unexpected—sometimes beautiful, sometimes clunky—that prioritise the material experience over language and the figurative.
