Shadow Play began life as a piece of theatre. I stand somewhere between being its director, screenwriter, set designer and stage manager but the plot remains a mystery. Characters were drawn individually, redrawn, cut out, assembled as a collage and drawn from the collage onto the plate. Creating an etching from the drawings lends the image a magic that no other medium can.

In 2012 I spent nine days exploring the depths of the Grand Canyon, USA. The mighty Colorado River cut my path between the majestic, seemingly insurmountable canyon walls that constantly framed my field of vision and, for a time, defined my world. I was fascinated by the scale and intricacy of these walls as well as the elemental power and dynamism visible in their form.

I am interested in the fragile relationship that New Zealanders have with the natural environment and its ecosystems. New Zealand’s native species spent millions of years evolving in isolation. Free from any predators, their evolution disregarded any ability to defend themselves by fight or flight. Sadly, they became easy prey for exotic predators that overran New Zealand’s forests in the 19th century.

This print is one of a series based on the small events of urban life. There is an attempt to evoke the sense of a story that could be told by the viewer about the subject. The image could come from any world city – part of our shared human experience. Noel Counihan and Kathe Kollwitz have been influences.

I feel that objects have intrinsic characteristics that seem to be imbued by the giver, the owner or where the pieces originate. Fragments of discarded objects are especially interesting because they have a sense of mystery about them. My collection of blue and white pieces celebrates the universal activity of collecting and displaying objects.

This work is inspired by my contemplation of the ring-barked yellow box gums that bear witness over the landscape near my property in Central Victoria. They stand in silent majesty, observing the changing fortunes of those who occupy it and pass before them.

Kim Barter – Many Journeys

$350.00 inc GST
Etching and carborundum
Edition of 30
Image size: 50 x 40 cm
Paper size: 76 x 56 cm

Many Journeys uses three plates to express how I feel and think about landscape. I look at the micro level to show that small things make up the whole, which is why my work appears to be quite abstract. I also use letters and images because I think landscape has a language of its own that is sometimes hard to read.

Lin Tobias – Caravan at Twilight

$300.00 inc GST
Linocut
Edition of 43
Plate size: 22 x 30 cm
Paper size: 38 x 57.5 cm
PCA Print Commission 2013

The humble caravan is a recurring theme in my work. I see them as a nod to less complicated times when simple pleasures were enough. The idea of a little self-contained home on wheels, customised to the owner’s whims, gives each a unique personality. They are all about the romance of the road, disappearing caravan parks, the travelling circus, ponies and gypsies.

Margaret Genever – Make way for the sounding trumpets

$330.00 inc GST
2 stone colour lithograph with watercolour pencil on Velin D’Arches 300gsm
Edition of 30
Image size: 53 x 38 cm
Paper size: 80 x 60 cm
PCA Print Commission 2013

The image is part of my ongoing examination of the fraught relationship between humans and all non-human animals. Trumpets shows dog/human creatures in a surreal circus-like setting. The trumpets have Biblical overtones and also refer to the ancient Greek trumpet contests where volume not musicality was the criteria. My work is influenced by the prints of Goya, especially the series Los Proverbios/Disparates.
