‘Drop tank’ is the name given to a World War II aircraft fuel tank. Three similar tanks were used by the artist Ian Fairweather to construct a raft in which he attempted to sail from Darwin to Indonesia in 1952. The journey was perilous, and Fairweather and the remains of the raft were washed up on the island of Roti. I am interested in the metaphoric significance of the ‘drop tank’.
