Although contained within the size of the sheet, the garden in this image moves beyond the sheet of paper, both in the cutting and in the strange beacon of light which plunges into the garden from the outside or leading from the garden to the beyond. At least on one level it can be interpreted as a passage of life or the passage of a life.

Woodcut Edition of 40 Image size: 56 x 76 cm Paper size: 56 x 76 cm PCA Print Commission 2004 The image Forest Debris-Cotter River and much of my recent work employs a fine woodcutting technique, which has grown out of research into the traditions and techniques of nineteenth century woodcutting, engraving and etching. I use horizontal and linear cutting to create a rhythmic density which is further enhanced by the grain of the woodblock itself. The technique allows the images to emulate a sense of cutting into and through a slice of the landscape.

From a series of limited edition artists' books through to works on and with paper, their intimate art pieces record, deconstruct ad respond to experiences in various countries and varying circumstances. A lament to the sleeping Kingfisher creates a whimsical landscape of ambiguous narrative, drawing from a history of imaginary voyages.

Small embossed portraits of a selection of lost bird species are combined with a bird's eye view of the city, looking from the city centre to the outskirts and vice versa. Silent songs are reversed out of this panorama.

It is simple, stark and amazingly beautiful, at once familiar and obvious, but at the same time elusive, mysterious and undecipherable. This language of the landscape is a metaphor for life itself. We try to understand it, but ultimately it remains unknowable.
