My central motivation is the intrinsic dialogue between landscape and people, how landscape is perceived through our library of pre-lived experiences and the ways in which this is reflected through the visual language of gesture.

‘The Lady With the Dog’ is a two-colour lithograph made with master printer Peter Lancaster. The key image was created with a water-based wash and rubbing crayon, with highlights added using sandpaper and a blade. The hand-sprayed (thumb and toothbrush to be precise) colour background was made on a ground-aluminium plate. The image is of my wife and our dog, a whippet, and named after a short story by Anton Chekhov.

‘Full, Empty’ is a contemplation of paradox. On one hand it plays with a familiar cliché of ‘glass half full/half empty’ but is also arises from the making process of relief printmaking in which matter is removed from a block to form an image. In a relief print the white areas are removed from a mirror image of the end result, unlike common drawing practice in which darker pigments are usually applied to white paper. In the image I centred a symmetrical form, and looking closer at the dandelions there is a mirroring of forms on the left and right of the image. These flowers and seedbeds are in their own process of ‘filling and emptying’ as is the cup with its contents in suspension. The cup references the Ace of Cups from the Tarot.

‘Panspermia Revolution’ is about three things:
1) The panspermia theory which describes life on earth being seeded from bacteria or molecular agents present in asteroids which collided with the earth to catalyse living organisms.
2) The contemporary mythology of The Ancient Astronaut which claims an Alien race visited during the Neanderthal period and genetically engineered humans using early man as a template.
3) The divinity of bees, who surely came from a cosmic creation miracle and are tiny Goddesses themselves, those makers of honey and waxen comb.

I have been exploring my responses to Lake Mungo, the land, its structure, spirituality, and ancient history. ‘Lake Mungo, Red Top’ is one of a body of lithographs, monotypes and paintings inspired by my time at Lake Mungo, sitting, drawing and writing in solitude among the sand and mud pinnacles. My aim was to try and capture a sense of the time evidenced as well as the spirit and energy of this ancient, powerful land.
