In my woodblock print I have focused on the architecture, streetscapes and layout of the city, I am intrigued with the organisation of cities and in the creation of my own maps. In this work I have amalgamated site drawings of buildings, streets and various structures to create a fish eye view of the inner west of Sydney. By creating such a cityscape I form a historical document and record of the specific place.

This print is from a series that revolved around three very influential places – a mountain in Laos: Mt Phusi, Mt Kalias in Tibet, and the mountains drawn by Louise Bourgeois of her mother’s home place. As is often found in art and writing, all three mountains are used as metaphors for the real, the ideal, the emotional.

The Soul of Stone in the Eastern Kimberley wilderness depicts our fundamental connection with our Earth. All our roots are deeply embedded in stone. My work explores this ageless attachment while also presenting the overlooked beauty of our indisputable ancestor, stone.

Helmet is from a body of works on paper called the ‘Tin Suit’ series. These prints, drawings and collages investigate and re-interpret two icons of Australian material culture: corrugated iron and Kelly Gang armour. The Kelly Gang led my infamous bushranger Ned Kelly were infamous 19th century Australian outlaws, who wore improvised metal armour suits in their gun battles with the police.

Beneath the mirrored moon
In a dark and secret room
Dreaming sisters in muted light
Sing a tale of sorrow to the deepening night,
Their sighs and whispers of the past belong
To the discordant memory of a cradle song.

The work comes from an ongoing series, which combines personal symbols of place with those pertaining to my parents and grandparents, creating a personal map, an ‘autobiographical map’. The left hand panel depicts the Gymea Lily, a symbol of place more than anything, denoting my previous home on the Illawarra escarpment north of Wollongong. The right shows a detail from a work by the 17th century Spanish painter Francisco Zurbaran, from a Carthusian monastery in my parents’ home town in Spain.
