The image suggests a retelling of the story of Goldilocks and the bears. In a collision of realities, a bather’s solitude in a period bathroom is invaded by screeching penguins.
Stability is fugitive, insecurity is a fact.

Although this work is a self-portrait the decision to work directly with a model is fundamental to my practice. The time spent with a sitter, the day to day stopping and starting of work, and subtle daily differences in both subject and artist, all contribute to the interpretations of the work. My practice draws upon past artistic traditions, including the work of Francis Bacon, Leon Kossoff and Lucien Freud.

The Green Line is part of a series of works referencing the Australian $100 note, overlaid with subtle and harmonious Arabic typography. The work provides a platform to discuss the long history of unrealistic representations of Middle Eastern customs and beliefs we have come to learn through art, literature, film, television and advertising.

My print is a multilayered monoprint. It combines deliberate and accidental marks, made using a range of methods such as offset, intaglio, transferred drawing and painted ground. It is inspired by long (and much anticipated) drives home along the highway, away from work, towards my home and my son.

Through reconstructed memories intangible threads create shapes and images that reference a complex migrations tory, Maria recalls a childhood playing under the grape vines in Recoaro, waiting with her mother to be reunited with a father on a banana farm in Northern NSW. By finely scouring the surfaces of existing photographs, emotionally resonant images are formed, full of suggestion and uncertainty. In these images, what is eliminated is in a sense commission, not omission, as the imagination has the chance to complete the picture. The unfinished is alive and it invites us to range within it, offering the opportunity to ease it towards meaning or completeness.

Between the mainland of Yirrkala and Gutjangan Island is a current of water that we call Rawu. My family live on this island and our stories are within this water. The sacred design of the Rirratjingu, my mother’s clan, contains the songs of our ancestors. The round forms are Yathiny. They are small jellyfish-like creatures that float along this current.

My work is related to the impermanence of life, the continuous event that is folding, unfolding and refolding. It reveals the unseen force travelling in space and time, the folds of wind, air and light, but also the folds of thought bursting forth. It engages not only the literal aspect of space and time, but also the aesthetic and perceptual.

Takatapui. Transgender. Physical Transition. Being between cultures and decisions. The integration of self and culture. The negotiation and navigation required to live in more than one world. I describe this as feeling like a Patiki/flounder. I feel like I have been struck in the head. This is how the Patiki/flounder gained its physical appearance. It was struck in the head.

The ground underfoot forms the visual subject matter and text, barely legible, offer an insight into the sensations and surroundings of that moment. A few hills south of QAG uses a photograph taken on a walk around Brisbane in 2005; its text references research, from that trip and back in Perth, relating to print collections. This work builds on a previous series.
