In May I spent a week at the Fowlers Gap Arid Research Station, 110km north of Broken Hill in far western New South Wales. The area by day is hard rocky desert. The ground is ancient and the plants are spiky. Walking the ranges of the station, your socks fill with spiky seed pods and prickly burrs. The small hardy plants have thorns and spikes to protect themselves and to help spread their seed. At sundown the landscape softens into pastel shades and the outlook becomes rounded, mellow and restrained. The two sides show the dichotomy between two versions of the same country.
