The game Cat’s Cradle involves a series of string figures created with the fingers. It spans hundreds of years and several different cultures, each of which has a different name for it. Its exact origin is unknown.

The unique artist book, Cat’s Cradle references the equally age-old process of hand-winding yarn into a ball. Yarn initially comes in the form of a loop called a skein, or hank (also a term for hair). In order to avoid a tangled mess, it is essential to wind the skein into a coil, a time-consuming practice that historically involves two people, usually women.
